THE utility and one-tonner light
trucks are as much a part of
Australian culture as the gum
tree, Akubra hat or a cup of billy tea.
For many, from learning to drive around the
farm to rolling out a swag on the back tray at
a B&S ball, the utility is a way of life.
As a farm vehicle, the traditional utility or
one-tonner is expected to be an all-round gen-
eral workhorse -- carry heavy loads, negotiate
rough paddocks and terrain, tow other items
of equipment, creep after livestock and travel
at reasonable speeds whenever someone wants
to go somewhere in a hurry.
While owners expect their vehicle to per-
form all these tasks with reliability, effective-
ness and efficiency, it is a fact of life that they
are more often than not the most neglected
and abused items of equipment on many
In recent times, however, the Australian love
affair with the utility vehicle has taken on a
new twist. No longer are all the vehicles sold
used and abused as farm workhorses because,
in some quarters, they have in fact become
With sleek styling, car-like interiors and a
few -- a lot in some cases -- extra dollars on
accessories, these vehicles are now the 'you
beaut utes' of generation Y.
The number of types, model and model
configurations of utilities and light trucks
available today is mind-boggling.
There are vehicles with standard cabs, extra
cabs, space cabs, dual cabs and twin cabs that
can be bought with a choice of petrol or diesel,
4-cylinder, 6-cylinder, V6 and V8 engines with
power ratings from 90-kilowatts to 270kW
coupled with 3, 4 or 5-speed manual or auto-
matic transmissions and sometimes an over-
They can be bought as utility styled vehicles,
cab-chassis units with tray tops of various
designs and style and can be fitted with a
choice of heavyduty or lightduty suspensions.
They can also bought fitted with aircondi-
tioning, CD and radio cassette players.
Seating is another area where buyers have
choices. Depending on the type and style of
vehicle, it can be fitted with a full-width bench
seat, twin bucket seats with storage room in
between, triple bucket seats or a one plus 1.5
combination where the drivers' bucket seat is
split from the passenger's bench seat.
In 2011, about 152,000 utility and one-
tonne vehicles from 12 brands were sold in
Australia. By wheel-drive, this can be broken
down to 52.179 two-wheel-drive units and
99,850 four-wheel drives.

AUSTRALIAN farmers have enough risk in their
lives in terms of drought, fire, flood, plague, com-
modity prices and currency fluctuations.
They are often forced to spend a good portion
of their small piece of the pie to limit their risk
through insurance, hedging or futures.
Minnesota, United States brand Polaris has a
ripper idea that can all but eliminate risk when
buying an ATV or side-by-side.
The company has a history of encouraging trial
of its ATVs and Ranger side-by-sides in the US
and now, it has challenged the conventional way
of buying an ATV in Australia.
In its 'LOVE IT' promotion that ran throughout
July, customers who bought any new Polaris
vehicle got 30 days to try it and could return it
for a full refund if they did not 'love it'.
The deal applied to every new Polaris vehicle,
from the Outlaw 50 kids quad to the big Ranger
six-seat diesel, even Polaris mowers.
Polaris marketing manager Neil Anderson said
the campaign paid-off.
"The company sold 246 vehicles in July, mostly
Rangers and Sportsman X2. It said only one
buyer brought back a vehicle -- a Hawkeye 300
bike -- which was upgraded to a Hawkeye 400,"
The national campaign has been extended till
The idea for the campaign came from an event
that sparked Polaris' growth in 2005.
Dubbed the 'Bet you $100' campaign, the pro-
motion was an open challenge to the public that
if they test-rode a Polaris and bought another
brand, the company would give them $100.
Polaris managing director Peter Alexander said
the three-month campaign won them plenty of
The company's innovation has continued with
products such as Sportsman X2 -- the only ATV
with a rear tip-tray that can hold 181 kilograms
and transform into a two-seater in seconds.
