Holloway has been handed a
500-page document from
Mount Barker District Council urg-
ing him to scrap plans that will
allow developers to build about
8000 houses on 1300 hectares of
rezoned farming land.
"Growth must be sustainable,
managed, staged and sound," the
town's mayor Ann Ferguson said in
a statement before the submission

earmarked for housing and associ-
ated infrastructure to 400ha to

Councillor Mark Parnell says this is
a clear conflict of interest.
MBDRA also questions why a
ministerial DPA was necessary for
the proposed development in the
30-year Plan for Greater Adelaide.

"Based on past experience and
the feeling in the community, I
believe a lot of people have made
the effort," he said. Submissions
were due by August 3.
He said the challenge for council
and government was to utilise pro-
ductive, rural land.
"It's pretty short-sighted (other-
wise), once houses go in there,
that's it," Mr Stuart said.
"We are arguing for development
that is less cut and fill and sympa-
thetic to the environment.
"Houses should go on stonier,
drier areas and be designed and
built with sustainability in mind -
not energy-hogging homes."
Besides what has been described
as totally unsustainable develop-
ment, there is a strong belief in the
community that developers stand
to make millions of dollars from
buying up options to secure prop-
erty to be rezoned.
Some figures touted include a
recent sale of 32ha of rural land
recently selling for $1m -- just out-
side the rezone boundary -- when
0.4ha usually makes between
$12,000 and $20,000.
Another parcel of land which
could yield 192 blocks of about
600 square metres -- or three to
0.4ha because of hilly terrain and
service requirements, such as roads
-- reportedly sold for more than
