ADELAIDE Hills fruit pro-
ducer Ian Filsell is plan-
ning to use a new fire
retardant to protect his packing
sheds after a successful trial on

When undertaking a burn-off
on his property last year, he
trialed the fire retardant -- FRV-3
-- spraying it along a track.
While trees on both sides of
the track were burnt off, the
vegetation along the track was
unaffected by the fire, even at
the hottest point at the top of
Not only was the vegetation
unaffected, it has continued to
grow and flourish after being
sprayed with the retardant,
which is non-toxic.
And this result came about
even after Mr Filsell diluted the
product down with water.
"I could see instantly that this
was something that would give
protective cover and be worth
every cent," he said.
Mr Filsell had seen first-hand
the devastation fires can cause.
On Ash Wednesday, the fires
came within kilometres of the
Filsell property and a neighbour
"I remember the flames
coming off the nearby forest
were about 300 metres high,"
Mr Filsell said.
"Luckily for us a wind change
came. Otherwise, I hate to think
what would have happened."
Mr Filsell now undertakes
regular burn-offs on his
With his packing sheds home
to a lot of old wooden frames,
he said the retardant would
help give peace of mind that
they would be protected in the
event of a fire.
FRV-3 is a water soluble,
environmentally compatible fire
retardant that can be used to
protect timber, brush fencing or
cardboard from combustion.
It is suited to the following
• All structural timber for new
• Roofing timbers of existing
houses and sheds.
• Brush fences.
• Protecting surrounding
grassed areas during burn offs.
• Dry mulch gardens around
plants in bushfire prone areas.
• Cardboard props and
structures for theatres.
• Timber pallets and fruit /
FRV-3 is applied by spraying
with a garden spray unit or
brushing onto the surface of
the structure requiring
protection from fire. Once
applied to bare timber or brush
fencing, it will remain active as
a fire retardant indefinitely
provided the surface remains
Brush fencing and exposed
external timber require annual
treatment unless protected with
a compatible clear acrylic or
water based paint for timber.
FRV-3 works by developing a
raised char surface when
exposed to fire.The char
provides a fire resistant
insulating barrier to the surface
of the timber or cardboard,
It costs about the same as a
good quality paint.
