PRICES held firm at the Strathalbyn
store cattle sale August 7, despite a
large crowd of onlookers and more
than 130 registrations.
About 800 head were yarded from
mainly local vendors, with some quality
stock sent over from Kangaroo Island.
Scott Henderson, Parndana, sold 15
July-August 2008-drop Angus/Murray
Grey/Poll Hereford cross steers for $525,
while 17 baldy heifers sold for $440.
RA&YG Hams, KI, sold 12 Angus steer
weaners for $590, and 12 Angus heifer
weaners made $420.
Buyers came from far and wide,
including Naracoorte, South East,
Fleurieu Peninsula and Loxton, as well as
Elders Strathalbyn auctioneer Darrell
Sims said steers were again well sought-
after, averaging $540-$600, while well-
bred stock sold to $675.
Two pens made the top price. Andrew
Bailey, Second Valley, sold 10 Angus
steers for $675 to Mick Morris,
Strathalbyn, while PK Mattner & Co, Ki
Ki, sold 15 Shorthorn steers for $675 to
Quality heifers also sold well, averaging
$460, however some lighter numbers
struggled to make $400.
But it was one pen of eight well-grown
Charolais heifer weaners from Shirley
Barker, Wistow, that wowed the crowd,
JA&LK Isaacson, Strathalbyn, also sold
an impressive pen of four Poll Hereford
cross heifers for $490 to Paul Carey,
Strathalbyn, while seven Hereford cross
steers made $540.
Richard Casley-Smith, Meadows, sold
17 Murray Grey heifer weaners for $425
to Landmark Strathalbyn, while W&B
Williams, Coomandook, also sold 12
Murray Grey heifer weaners for $460.
Pregnancy-tested-in-calf and cow and
calf units were also on offer, making
Evan Everest, Inman Valley, sold five
Angus cows (run with Angus bull since
mid-June) with Angus/Murray Grey CAF
for $1010 to Chris Hocking.
Temaru Pastoral, Meningie, sold six
Angus cows PTIC with two Angus
Hereford CAF for $650, and Adelaide
Turbo Services, Currency Creek, sold 13
Angus heifers (run with Willalooka bull
from 15/4/09-10/7/09) for $500.
Other notable sales include:
IF Blight, Wistow, who sold four Oct-
Nov 07-drop Shorthorn steers for $620.
Muster Enterprises, Lobethal, sold 13
Angus steer yearlings for $620 to Bob
Slade, Hahndorf, while 11 seconds sold
for $600 to the same buyer. Muster also
sold 15 Angus heifer yearlings for $460.
A&C Holly, Macclesfield, sold 11 Angus
steers for $610 to Colin Harvey, Echunga,
while six Murray Grey steers went for
PR&RE Schmidt, Meadows, sold 11
Angus weaner steers for $570, and 12
Angus heifer weaners made $430.
John Warwick Pty Ltd, Hawker, sold 14
Hereford/Murray Grey steer weaners for
$400, while eight baldy steers went for
$440. Nine Warwick heifer weaners also
sold for $320 to Elders Coonalpyn, and
17 baldy heifers sold for $330 to Elders
Charolais heifers make $660 at Strath
TOP MANAGEMENT: Tony Weatherly, Eagle
on the Hill, manages up to 80 breeders on SP
Estates at Eagle on the Hill. He sold 10 Angus
steers for $570, 12 Murray Grey steers for
$565, and 10 Angus heifers for $380 at Strath
BULK BUY: Elders Coonalpyn agent, Bryan
Biddle attended Strathalbyn with client and
Reichstein Pastoral stock manager Graham
Keller, Coonalpyn. They bought about 75
head, mainly Angus cross heifers, for prices

THE first of new-season lambs met strong
competition at the Landmark Anderson &
Fawcett Mount Pleasant market on
More than 470 sheep and lambs were
offered during the sheep and lambs
market, with T&R Pastoral the major buyer
of the prime sucker lambs on offer.
Mount Pleasant regular Steven Marks,
Caurnamont Farms, Purnong, topped the
market with 84 April-drop sucker lambs
selling to $109 to T&R.
MR&GD&KH Rathjen, Springton, also sold
a draft of suckers to $104, and Craig
Schultz, Sedan, sold 55 crossbred sucker
lambs to $90.
Older crossbred lambs sold between $65-
$76, while January-drop, shorn Merino
wether lambs made $47. Hoggets sold to
$55, and mutton averaged $60.
In the cattle sale, about 160 head was
offered, with grain-fed yearlings making
$610-$780, and store steers selling to $550
with store heifers to $400.
Prime cattle met with strong demand.
Best heavy milk vealers from CM
Bond, Walker Flat, made to $780, while
best trade-weight yearlings from GD Wicks,
Gumeracha, sold to $790.
Cows with calves at foot were well
sought after by graziers.
SP Holts, Eden Valley, sold Poll Hereford
cows and calves topped the sale at $840,
and DG&DE Noblet, Tungkillo, sold
crossbred cows and calves to $770.
Pregnancy-tested in-calf cows from
RD&CF Andrews, Springton, sold to $700.
Robert Wachter, Light Pass, sold seven
vealers (Murray Grey Santa Gertrudis
cross) to $440.
The next Mt Pleasant market will be held
on Wednesday, September 16.

STEEP STEERS: Byrne Carmichael, Santa Cruz, sold 20 April 08-drop, Poll Hereford steers, av
360kg, to $650. Byrne runs 150 breeders at Waitpinga as well as 2200 Merino ewes, with 50
per cent mated to Dorsets.
TOP CROSSBREDS: Mount Pleasant
regular Steven Marks, Purnong, sold 84
April-2009 drop sucker lambs to $109.
Steven runs 500 Merino ewes, which are
mated to White Suffolk and Dohne rams.
